History and symbolism of diamonds

Amongst the world’s most sought after treasures, you might be wondering where are diamonds found? Formed deep under the Earth’s crust billions of years ago, we’ve adored and adorned diamonds for centuries, believing they’re the ultimate gift and symbol of eternal love. Most commonly found in Africa, diamond mining has become more popular in places such as Russia and Canada, too.

Diamonds can come in many different colours such as yellow, blue and pink (check out our blog on rare diamond colours), however the most popular April birthstone colour is in fact colourless. The Gemmological Institute of America (GIA) grades diamond colour on a scale of D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown), with a chemically pure and structurally perfect diamond having no colour, making it rarer and more valuable.

So, what is the diamond meaning? A symbol of love, faithfulness, purity and innocence, diamonds are known as the love-bearing crystal, making them the perfect gemstone for engagement rings and wedding rings. They are believed to help open the mind to the new and possible and inspire imagination in its wearer. Other diamond healing properties include strength, fortitude and courage through the hardness of the gemstone, giving the power to drive away bad energy or fortune.
