Umbra was founded in Toronto in 1979 by Paul Rowan and Les Mandelbaum. The story began when Rowan, frustrated with the lack of stylish yet affordable window treatments, designed his own printed window shade for his apartment. Recognising the potential to turn this idea into a business, he joined forces with childhood friend Mandelbaum, and together they launched what would soon become one of the most recognisable names in home décor.
